Every consultation includes this question, and most people have already been given a bad answer somewhere else. Usually the bad answer is "three or four" and it came from someone trying to make a package sound affordable.
The real number is six to eight sessions for most people, and then a maintenance session once or twice a year after that. Let me explain what drives it, because the number is not the same for your underarms as it is for your husband's back.
Why one session cannot do it
Your hair is not all doing the same thing at the same time. Each follicle cycles through a growth phase, a transition phase and a resting phase, and the laser can only destroy a follicle during the growth phase, when the hair is still attached to the root that the light energy travels down to.
At any given moment, only a fraction of the hair in an area is in that phase. Face is roughly 20 to 30 percent. Legs and back are lower. So a perfectly performed session clears the hair that happens to be active that day, and everything else is untouched, waiting its turn.
That is the entire reason for spacing. It is not a sales structure. It is the biology of the follicle.

The realistic session count by area
| Area | Typical sessions | Spacing |
|---|---|---|
| Underarms | 6 to 8 | 6 weeks |
| Bikini or Brazilian | 6 to 8 | 6 weeks |
| Lower legs | 8 to 10 | 8 weeks |
| Upper lip and chin | 8 to 12, then maintenance | 4 weeks |
| Back or chest | 8 to 10 | 8 weeks |
| Beard shaping | 8 to 12 | 4 to 6 weeks |
What makes your number higher or lower
Hair color decides almost everything
The laser targets melanin in the hair. Dark, coarse hair absorbs the energy beautifully. Fine blonde hair, red hair, gray and white hair have little to no melanin to absorb it, and no number of sessions changes that. If a clinic promises to clear your gray hairs, they are taking your money.
Hormones can rewrite the plan
PCOS, thyroid conditions, pregnancy, perimenopause and certain medications all push dormant follicles into activity. This is why chin and upper lip hair on women is the one area where I am upfront that maintenance is likely to be ongoing rather than optional. Laser is still absolutely worth doing. It just does not end the way leg hair ends.
Skin tone changes the settings, not the count
Deeper skin tones need a longer wavelength and more conservative settings so the energy targets the hair and not the surrounding skin. Done properly, results are excellent. Done carelessly, you get burns and pigment changes. I wrote about this in detail in laser hair removal on dark skin.
Skipping appointments costs you sessions
This is the one that is entirely in your control, and the one people get wrong. If you disappear for four months between sessions, the follicles you cleared last time have cycled back and you have lost ground. The schedule is the treatment.
What "finished" actually looks like
Not bare skin forever. A realistic finish line is 70 to 90 percent fewer hairs, and the ones that remain come back finer, lighter and slower, so a quick shave every few weeks replaces a daily routine.
Most of my clients hit that point somewhere in session six to eight, then come back once or twice a year for a top up. Some never come back and are perfectly happy. Both are normal.
Rules that make your sessions count
Between appointments
- Shave, do not wax. Waxing, plucking and threading remove the root that the laser needs. Stop them four weeks before you start.
- Shave the night before or the morning of. The follicle should be there, the hair above the skin should not.
- No sun on the treatment area for two weeks either side. A tan changes the melanin in your skin and forces me to reduce settings, which reduces your result.
- Skip retinol on the area for about five days before and after.
- Come in even if you think there is nothing to treat. The hairs you cannot see are the ones the timing is for.
Winter is the easier season to start
Not because the laser works differently in December, but because you are covered up, you are not at the shore, and by June you are several sessions in instead of just starting. Newark summers are not kind to a treatment schedule that requires you to stay out of the sun.
What a course costs
At my studio laser hair removal starts at $90 a session depending on the area, and package pricing is available for a series. What matters more than my number or anyone else's is that you compare the same thing: cost per session multiplied by the honest number of sessions, not the promotional price of the first appointment.
Full pricing is on the services page, and if you want a quote for a specific area, send me a message on WhatsApp and tell me where and how coarse the hair is.
