How laser tattoo removal works

Tattoo ink sits in the dermis in particles too large for your immune system to carry away. That is why a tattoo is permanent.

The laser fires extremely short pulses of light that the ink absorbs. The energy shatters those particles into fragments small enough for your body to clear through the lymphatic system over the following weeks. The laser does not erase anything. It breaks the ink up and your own body does the removal, which is exactly why the spacing between sessions is not negotiable.

Start, mid-series, and final. Removal is gradual by design, not by accident.

What decides your session count

  • Ink colour. Black and dark blue clear best. Greens and light blues are stubborn. White and flesh tones are the hardest of all.
  • Professional or amateur. Amateur and stick-and-poke tattoos sit shallower and with less ink, so they often clear faster.
  • Age of the tattoo. Older ink has already faded some and usually needs fewer sessions than fresh work.
  • Density and layering. Heavy shading, solid blackwork and cover-ups mean more ink to break down.
  • Location on the body. Areas with better circulation clear faster. The chest and back clear more readily than the fingers, ankles and feet.
  • Your health. Clearance is immune work. Hydration, not smoking and general health genuinely affect how fast it goes.

Fading for a cover-up

Not everybody wants the tattoo gone. Plenty of people want it light enough for a new piece to work over it, and that is a much shorter project. Three to five sessions is often enough for a tattoo artist to have a workable canvas. Say so at the consultation, because the plan and the cost are completely different from full removal.

What a session is like

  1. Consultation, photo, and a written estimate of sessions and cost.
  2. Protective eyewear for both of you, then cooling on the area.
  3. The passes themselves. A small tattoo takes a few minutes.
  4. Immediately afterwards the area goes white for several minutes, which is expected, then pink and swollen.
  5. Ointment and a dressing, plus written aftercare.

Aftercare, and this part matters

The first two weeks

  • Keep the area clean, dry and covered for the first few days
  • Blistering and scabbing are normal. Do not pick, pop or scrub any of it. Picking is the main cause of scarring
  • No swimming, hot tubs, saunas or long hot showers for at least a week
  • No sun on the area at all during the course, and SPF 30 daily on anything exposed
  • No shaving over the area until it has fully closed
  • Drink water and move. Clearance is your lymphatic system doing the work

An honest warning

Not every tattoo comes out completely. Some leave a faint shadow or a change in skin texture where dense ink used to be, and certain colours resist everything. Anyone who guarantees a perfect result on a heavily layered, multi-coloured piece has not looked at it properly.

You will get a straight assessment here before you spend anything, including the sentence "this one will take longer than you want it to" when that is the truth.

Laser Tattoo Removal: common questions

How much does tattoo removal cost in Newark, NJ?

At Ella Beauty Skin Care it starts at $60 per session for a small tattoo, with the price set by size. Because removal is a series, the number that matters is the price per session multiplied by a realistic session count, which you will get at the free consultation.

How many sessions does tattoo removal take?

Six to twelve for most tattoos, spaced six to eight weeks apart. Amateur and stick-and-poke tattoos often clear in fewer. Dense professional work, heavily layered pieces and cover-ups can take more than twelve.

Why does it take so many sessions?

The laser does not remove ink, it shatters it into fragments small enough for your immune system to carry away. That clearing happens over the weeks between sessions, which is why spacing matters. Treating too frequently does not speed it up, it just irritates the skin.

Does tattoo removal hurt?

It is sharper than getting the tattoo, usually described as hot flecks or an elastic band snapped against the skin, but each pass is short. Cooling is used throughout and a small tattoo takes only a few minutes.

Which tattoo colours are hardest to remove?

Black and dark blue clear best because they absorb the widest range of wavelengths. Reds respond reasonably well. Greens and light blues are stubborn, and white and flesh-toned inks are the most difficult of all, sometimes darkening on treatment.

Will it leave a scar?

Properly performed removal usually does not scar, but the risk is not zero, and it rises with picking at scabs, sun exposure and treating too aggressively. Existing scarring from the original tattoo will still be there after the ink goes.

Is tattoo removal safe on dark skin?

It requires care. The laser targets pigment, and melanin in the surrounding skin competes for that energy, so deeper skin needs a longer wavelength, conservative settings and a patch test. Expect a more gradual plan and more sessions rather than an aggressive one.

Can you fade a tattoo for a cover-up instead of removing it?

Yes, and that is a common request. Fading for a cover-up takes far fewer sessions than complete removal, usually three to five, because your tattoo artist only needs the old ink lightened enough to work over. Tell Priscila that is the goal at the consultation.
