What Is a Hollywood Peel? The Carbon Laser Facial

Carbon mask applied before a Hollywood Peel carbon laser facial in Newark NJ
Short answer

A Hollywood Peel is a carbon laser facial. A layer of liquid carbon is applied to the skin, it settles into pores and binds to oil and dead cells, and a laser then passes over the face and vaporizes the carbon along with everything stuck to it. There is no peeling and no downtime. It is excellent for oily skin, congested pores and dullness, and it does nothing for wrinkles or loose skin.

First, the name is misleading. There is no peel. Nothing acidic touches your face, nothing flakes off afterwards, and you can go straight from my chair to dinner.

What it actually is: a carbon laser facial. And it is one of the few treatments where the before and after photo taken the same afternoon is honest.

How it works

A thin layer of liquid carbon is painted onto your skin and left to settle. Carbon particles are small enough to sink into your pores and they bind to oil, dead cells and general congestion sitting in there.

Then the laser passes over the face. The energy is drawn to the carbon, heats it instantly, and vaporizes it. Everything the carbon grabbed onto goes with it. That is the loud clicking part, and it is oddly satisfying to watch.

There is a second pass without the carbon at a different setting, which delivers gentle heat into the skin to stimulate a mild collagen response and even out tone. Total appointment, around thirty minutes.

What it is genuinely good for

  • Oily skin. Noticeably less shine for a couple of weeks. This is the strongest effect.
  • Congested, visible pores. Blackheads across the nose and cheeks clear out.
  • Dullness. The brightening is immediate, which is why it is the go-to before a wedding or a photo shoot.
  • Mild breakouts. The heat has an antibacterial effect and less oil means less to feed a breakout.
  • Uneven tone and mild texture. Subtle, but it accumulates over a series.

What it will not do

I would rather you hear this from me than be quietly disappointed.

It will not treat wrinkles. It will not lift or tighten anything meaningful. It will not remove acne scarring, and it will not clear melasma or deep pigment. It does not replace a facial extraction routine if your skin is severely congested, and it is not a treatment for cystic acne.

If any of those are your actual concern, you want Morpheus8 or HIFU for structure and texture, or a proper peel series for pigment. The Hollywood Peel is a surface treatment, and it is very good at being one.

Why people book it: no downtime

This is the entire commercial appeal. You leave slightly pink for maybe thirty minutes and then you look like yourself, only cleaner. You can wear makeup the same day. Nothing flakes, nothing needs hiding.

Compare that with a chemical peel, where you look great on day seven and questionable on day three. If you have an event on Saturday, this is Friday's treatment. A peel is not.

The event treatment. Book it the day before, not the week before, because the glow peaks fast.

Is it safe on darker skin?

Yes, with correct settings, and this is a treatment I perform on deep skin tones regularly. The laser is drawn to the carbon rather than to your skin, which is part of what makes it forgiving. That said, settings still matter, tanned skin is still a reason to reschedule, and the same rules from my article on laser treatments on dark skin apply to who is holding the device.

Before and after

Simple rules

  • Come with a clean face, no makeup if possible.
  • Stop retinol and acids for three days before.
  • No active tan. Reschedule if you have just come back from vacation.
  • Afterwards: gentle cleanser, moisturizer, SPF 30 the next morning without fail.
  • Skip the gym and the sauna for 24 hours.
  • Wait a week before your next acid or retinol night.

One session or a series?

One session is a glow that lasts one to three weeks. Perfect for an event, and plenty of people book it exactly that way and never do anything else.

A series of four to six, spaced two to four weeks apart, is what actually changes oil production and pore congestion over time. If shine and blackheads are a permanent feature of your life rather than an occasional annoyance, the series is what you want.

The Hollywood Peel is $150 at my studio, listed with everything else on the services page. I am at 520 Ferry Street in the Ironbound, and if you are not sure whether this or a peel is right for your skin, book the free consultation and I will look at your pores in person instead of guessing from a photo.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a Hollywood Peel do?

It deep cleans congested pores, reduces surface oil, clears dead skin, and adds a gentle heat stimulus that brightens and evens the skin. Most people notice smaller looking pores, less shine and a clearer complexion within a day.

Is a Hollywood Peel the same as a carbon laser facial?

Yes. Hollywood Peel, carbon laser facial, carbon peel and China doll facial are all names for the same treatment. There is no actual chemical peel involved, which is why the name confuses people.

How long does the glow last?

Usually one to three weeks from a single session. It is a treatment people book before an event for that reason. For a lasting change in oil and congestion, a series of four to six sessions spaced two to four weeks apart works far better.

Does a Hollywood Peel hurt?

No. Most people describe warmth and a light snapping sensation, along with a loud clicking sound from the laser. There is no numbing needed and no recovery period.

How much does a Hollywood Peel cost?

At Ella Beauty Skin Care in Newark, NJ, the Hollywood Peel is $150 per session. Series pricing is available if you are treating ongoing oiliness and congestion rather than booking for a single event.
