I work on Ferry Street. My clients are Brazilian, Dominican, Ecuadorian, Haitian, Puerto Rican, Cape Verdean, West African and everything else Newark is made of. Most of the skin that walks through my door is Fitzpatrick IV, V or VI.
So I take this question personally, because for years the answer people got was "we do not treat skin like yours," and that answer was never really about safety. It was about the device the clinic bought.
What actually makes darker skin different
Laser hair removal works by sending light energy that melanin absorbs. The energy turns to heat, and that heat damages the follicle so it stops producing hair.
The problem is that melanin does not only live in your hair. It lives in your skin. On light skin with dark hair, there is a big contrast between the target and the surroundings, so the energy goes where it is supposed to. As skin gets deeper, that contrast narrows, and a setting that is routine on pale skin starts heating the skin itself.
That is the entire risk. Not some special fragility of Black or brown skin. A physics problem with a known solution.
The solution is wavelength
Longer wavelengths travel deeper and are absorbed less by the melanin sitting near the surface of your skin.
- Nd:YAG, 1064nm. The safest choice for the deepest tones. It goes past the epidermis to reach the follicle. It stings more than other lasers, and that tradeoff is worth it.
- Diode, around 800 to 810nm. Usable on many medium to deep brown tones with proper cooling and conservative fluence, and a good option for coarse body hair.
- Alexandrite, 755nm. Excellent on light skin. Not the right tool for deeply pigmented skin.
- IPL. Not a laser at all, a broad spectrum flash. On deep skin tones I would avoid it, and I would especially avoid the home devices marketed at everyone.
If you ask a clinic which wavelength they will use on you and the answer is vague, you have learned what you needed to learn.
Settings and cooling matter as much as the machine
A great device at careless settings will still burn you. What a careful protocol looks like on deeper skin:

- Patch test on a small area, then wait several days to see how the skin responds.
- Start conservative and increase gradually across sessions rather than starting hot.
- Contact cooling or cold air during every pass, not just at the end.
- Longer pulse durations, which spread the heat over more time and spare the surrounding skin.
- Treat only untanned skin. A fresh tan is a reason to reschedule, not to push through.
- Watch the skin during treatment, not the clock.
What a normal reaction looks like
Immediately after, you should see mild redness and small raised bumps around each follicle, like goosebumps. That is called perifollicular edema and it is a sign the follicle absorbed the energy. It settles within hours to a day or two.
What is not normal: blistering, white or gray patches, skin that keeps getting more painful hours later, or crusting. If any of that happens, contact your provider that day. I give clients my WhatsApp for exactly this reason.
Post inflammatory hyperpigmentation, and how to avoid it
Deeper skin responds to injury by making pigment. That is true of a burn, a scratch, a breakout, and an overpowered laser pulse. The dark mark that follows is called post inflammatory hyperpigmentation, and it fades, but it can take months.
Avoiding it is mostly about avoiding inflammation in the first place, then protecting the skin afterwards.
- No sun on the area for two weeks before and two weeks after. Yes, in Newark, in July, this is inconvenient. Do it anyway.
- Daily SPF 30 or higher on any exposed treated area, and please ignore the myth that darker skin does not need sunscreen.
- No retinol, no acids and no scrubs on the area for about five days on either side of the session.
- No hot tubs, saunas or intense workouts for 24 to 48 hours.

The razor bump reason
Half the men who come to me for laser are not thinking about hair removal at all. They are thinking about the bumps along the jaw and neck that come back every time they shave.
Curly, coarse hair grows back into the skin instead of straight out of it. The body treats it as a foreign object, and you get pseudofolliculitis barbae: inflamed bumps, dark marks, sometimes scarring. Shaving harder makes it worse.
Laser interrupts that cycle at the source. Even a partial course thins the density enough that the hair stops fighting its way back through the skin. It is one of the most satisfying things I treat, because the relief is immediate and visible.
What to ask before you book anywhere
- Which laser and which wavelength will you use on my skin type?
- How many clients with skin like mine have you treated?
- Do you patch test, and when?
- What cooling do you use during the pass?
- What do I do if I see a blister or a white patch tomorrow, and how do I reach you?
A provider who is comfortable treating deep skin will enjoy answering these. A provider who is not will change the subject to a package price.
How many sessions, and what it costs
Skin tone changes the settings, not really the number of sessions. Expect six to eight, sometimes more on the face, which I break down in how many sessions you actually need. Laser hair removal at my studio starts at $90 per session by area.
